Thai Cabinet increases film production incentive by up to 30%

To promote foreign film production in Thailand, to generate revenue from investment in foreign film productions and to compete with neighboring countries in the region, the Thai cabinet has agreed and approved measures proposed by the Ministry of Tourism & Sports in early February 2023 which can be summarized below.

Current Scheme New Proposed Scheme
  • Cash rebate up to 20% incentive:
    • 15% for filming in Thailand; and
    • The 15% may be increased by up to 5% for, among others, using local crew members, filming in areas promoted by the government, post-production in Thailand, and promoting Thai culture.
  • For local expenditure of more than THB 50 M (approx. USD 1.4 M)
  • Capped maximum rebate at THB 75 M (approx. USD 2.2 M)
  • Cash rebate up to 30% incentive:
    • 20% for filming in Thailand; and
    • The 20% may be increased by up to 10% for, among others, using local crew members, filming in areas promoted by the government, post-production in Thailand, and promoting Thai culture.
  • For local expenditure of more than THB 100 M (approx. USD 2.8 M)
  • Capped maximum rebate at THB 150 M (approx. USD 4.4 M)

Currently, the Ministry of Tourism & Sports will consider and make appropriate changes to the details of eligible qualifying productions and other conditions in relation to the incentive. LEXEL will keep monitoring this matter and will provide updates as appropriate.
